Chapter 8
I looked at Angelica. "So Elizabeth said that there is a place with more airplanes but it's very dangerous."
"Wow." Angelica looked up at Elizabeth. "She looks scared. What would scare an iguana bigger than my house?"
"Good question." <<Elizabeth, what's so dangerous about it?>>
Elizabeth snorted and looked up over the trees. <<Creatures like you but meaner. Also Kumoneko.>>
"She says there are people there who are meaner."
"Natives?"
"Maybe. Also something called Kumoneko." <<Elizabeth, what's Kumoneko?>>
Elizabeth's whole body shivered. <<I don't want to talk about it, and I don't want to go. Do you really need to go there, Master?>>
<<I think we do. If we don't get the piece we need, we can't go home.>>
Elizabeth exhaled. <<You are my Master. I will obey. I will take you to Kumoneko's lair.>>
"She says she'll take us, but she's not happy about it."
Angelica wiped off her hands. "I can see that. Okay, let's eat and then go."
Angelica and I sat cross-legged on the ground, surrounded by the heap of fruits that Elizabeth had gathered for us. The vibrant colors and enticing aromas of the fruit filled the air, making our mouths water in anticipation as I took bananas and handed one to Angelica.
She peeled hers and ate, and relished it with sighs and closed eyes. "Oh, I never thought a banana would taste this good."
"Neither did I."
I picked up one of the coconuts, and Angelica used one of her screwdrivers to crack holes in them. We eagerly sipped from the coconut shells, quenching our thirst and savoring the natural sweetness.
It made me sigh, too. "Mmm, this fruit is delicious. I can't believe how sweet and juicy it is."
"I know, right? Maybe I'm just hungry, but this seems so much better than the fruit we ate back home. Maybe because it's fresh or organic or something like that. Can you thank Elizabeth for me?"
"Sure." <<Thanks, Elizabeth.>>
Elizabeth's mouth hung open in what looked like a smile. <<You're welcome, Master. It is my honor to feed and nourish you.>>
I reached up to stroke one of her paws.
Angelica sighed while looking up at the sky growing darker. "You know, I guess this whole thing has reminded me that we should appreciate the simple joys in life. I know when I - if I - get back to civilization, I won't take life for granted."
"Me either. And it seems like things have turned around quickly for us. Less than twenty-four hours ago, we were stranded, hungry, and scared. Now, we have protection, food, and hope of escape. That's awesome."
Angelica nodded. "It is. You told me to have hope, and I didn't believe you. I appreciate it."
"Couldn't have done it without you."
She leaned forward and we kissed.
Elizabeth growled a little under her breath but said nothing, thankfully.
Angelica finally pointed at her. "Is she hungry? Does she want some?"
I held up a banana. <<Do you eat fruit?>>
Elizabeth shook her head. <<I do not eat those.>>
<<What do you eat?>>
<<The worms are good. Also small pigs.>>
<<So you only eat meat?>>
<<Yes.>>
I turned to Angelica. "She only eats meat.
